Overview
VEX IQ is a robotics set designed for students in grades 4-8. The VEX kits can be used for both classroom instruction and competition in VEX robotics competitions. VEX robots bridge the gap between LEGO robots in FLL and the larger, more advanced robots robots that Stampede or Rodeo Robotics build in FRC. The VEX program is newest addition to the Breck Robotics programs and is the only one not run by FIRST.
Students participating in VEX robotics for the 2025-2026 school year will have the option to participate in a recreational setting or a competition setting. The recreational group will meet every Friday after school to try to accommodate other extracurricular activities or sports. The competition group will meet on Tuesdays in addition to Fridays.
Recreational Team
The VEX IQ recreational team will meet every Tuesday afterschool (likely from 3:30pm to 5:30pm). Instead of building robots for competition, they will participate in engaging, small-team robotics activities. Towards the beginning of the year, these activities will be primarily instructor-led in order to acquaint students with the platform. After the first few sessions, teams will engage in larger, self-led projects that they will work on for a few weeks at a time. Students may switch teams within the first few weeks of starting the program, but as the competitive season goes on, it will become harder and harder to switch.
Competitive Team
The VEX IQ competitive team will meet every Tuesday and Friday afterschool (likely from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm). They will primarily focus on building robots to play this year’s game (see video below). Upper School student mentors will help the competitive team(s) design and build a robot from scratch. This program is geared towards students who do not participate in many other extracurricular activities. After building their robot, they will participate in a local scrimmage that will likely take place some time in early 2026. While competitive in nature, the primary purpose of the program is still learning.
